Stonehenge is the most important prehistoric monument in Britain. Probably used as a temple, the history of Stonehenge spans about 15 centuries from about 3050BC to 1600BC. Since Stonehenge is a protected site you can no longer walk up and touch the stones. When I was there the weather was cold and it had rained a lot the previous days. There is a paved path that leads past the monument on the West side and a dirt path around it. The dirt path was closed for fear of erosion. You park your car across the street and an underground walkway (subway) leads under the street and puts you inside the fence that surrounds Stonehenge.
